A step-by-step guide to record calls on your Android smartphone

How to record a call on your Android phone

Gone are the days when you needed an external recorder to record a call on your mobile device. With Apple finally adding an option to record phone calls natively, it is now easier than ever to record a call. However, it has been easy to record a call on an Android phone for years.

Whether you are recording an interview or preserving an important conversation, there are many ways to do it on your Android phone. However, before you record a call, it is important to inform your caller as well as follow any laws that may apply. With that out of the way, here’s a step-by-step guide on how to record a call on your Android phone.

Record call on Android: How to record using native app

The first step to recording a call on your Android phone is to check if that feature is available on the native phone app. Most Android phones come with a built-in call-recording feature that makes it easier to record conversations without downloading a third-party app. Here’s how this works:

Step 1: Open the phone app on your Android device.

Step 2: Go to the settings menu by clicking on the three dots in the top-right corner.

Step 3: Look for a call recording option and enable it.

Step 4: Once enabled, you can start recording calls by tapping the record button during the call.

This option to record calls might be enabled by default or restricted in certain regions. You will also have the option to automatically record calls from unknown numbers and the recordings will be suspended if your device runs out of storage. Do check the local privacy laws as well before using this feature.

Auto Call Recorder app: Record using a third-party app

If your Android phone does not include a built-in call-recording function then a viable option to record calls is using a third-party app. While there are many apps that enable recording calls on Android, one of the most popular apps is Auto Call Recorder. Here is how to record a call on your Android phone using the Auto Call Recorder app.

Step 1: Download the Auto Call Recorder app from the Google Play Store.

Step 2: Once downloaded, grant necessary permissions to use the app.

Step 3: Configure the app settings to enable automatic or manual recording.

Step 4: Start making calls and the app will handle the task of recording your calls.

Before you use a third-party call recorder app, you will need to turn on the accessibility service if your device is running Android 10 or higher. Tap the Turn On button and at the accessibility settings screen, tap Call Recorder and turn on Use Call Recorder.

On the app, enable or disable automatic recording for incoming and outgoing calls. You can also choose specific contacts for automatic recording or record all calls. There is also an option to save the recording to cloud storage like Google Cloud or Dropbox.

In addition to using the call-recording feature on the native phone app or using a third-party app like Auto Call Recorder, you can also use Google’s Phone app to record calls on an Android phone. However, the experience of recording phone calls will mostly depend on the version of Android installed on your device.
