How to plan a virtual Valentine’s Day date

A few kilometres shouldn't be a reason for you to forgo a celebration of love

How to plan a virtual Valentine’s Day date

It’s that time of the year again when gift shops ambush us with everything pink, restaurants are suddenly overcharging, and our favourite OTT platforms unexpectedly have an influx of romcoms. You guessed right, Valentine’s week is upon us. Those of us in a relationship already have plans, and for those who are single, it’s probably just another Wednesday. But if you’re one of those poor souls trapped in the unfortunate web of LDR (long-distance relationship), you’re probably in a limbo that you can’t escape.

But thanks to the rampant digitalisation and the availability of apps on our smartphones, there are so many ways to still make the most of an occasion like Valentine’s Day. If you and your loved ones are separated by kilometres and overly priced air tickets, there are plenty of other ways to celebrate the day (albeit virtually). We have a few tips to help you add a spark to your Wednesday; check them out below:

Planning a virtual Valentine's Date: What do you need?

If you have a stable internet connection and, well, a Valentine, there are only a few other steps you need to follow to make their day.

Setup a video call

Courtesy smartphones with great front cameras, you probably don’t have to worry about finding a good platform to enjoy a leisurely chat with your partner. However, if you’re planning a date, it is best to use platforms like Zoom and Teams on your laptop to have a better heart-to-heart conversation. Set up some time and don’t forget to dress up! Now, whether you choose to play online games, catch up on your day or simply want to admire them, there couldn’t be a better day to get things planned.

Arrange a movie date

Pick out your favourite movie or a beloved rom-com and have a watch party with your significant other. While you can choose to do this via your chosen video conferencing platform, you can also rely on watch party extensions and websites like twoseven that can give you the feeling of being in the same room.

Sending them food

Sending someone food today is a simple, thoughtful gesture that you can carry out from almost anywhere. All you need is their address, availability and your smartphone to send their favourite cuisine home to them. You can also order the same dish at home and add a few candles for the perfect make-believe date. What more do you need?

Planning a virtual gift exchange

Like Secret Santa, you can always have a virtual gift exchange for Valentine’s Day. Log into your go-to e-commerce app and send them a gift-wrapped present, especially for the occasion. No matter their personality, there’s always a gadget for everyone. However, make sure you plan in advance and keep their suggestions in mind!

Have a virtual jam session

Apps like Spotify now give you the option of curating a blended playlist, giving you a modern-day mixtape. No matter where your partner is, you both can chime into the same playlist and listen to your favourite songs out loud. And while you’re at it, you can make it into a virtual dance party for two. There’s no stopping!

While there are plenty of other ways to spice things up, we’re sure this list will help you get started. So, if you needed an excuse to celebrate this year, we have you covered with some of the simplest last-minute ways to make your partner’s day.
