How to make WhatsApp your default calling and messaging app on iPhone

WhatsApp’s trajectory has changed drastically from being an instant messaging smartphone app to a full-fledged video-conferencing platform. In fact, the Meta-owned company has added in features such as document scanning and screen sharing to make it more user-friendly for its audience.

But if that’s not all, a new update in the pipeline is all set to turn WhatsApp into the default calling and messaging app for iOS users. With this in place, users will be able to send messages and calls directly using WhatsApp without the need to switch between the apps. Here’s how:

Using WhatsApp as the default messaging app on an iPhone

Apple’s new policies now allow users to set third-party apps as a default across various day-to-day tasks. This includes messaging, calls, emails, and even browsing the web. The change comes in with the iOS 18.2 update and it allows iPhone users to move away from built-in apps, such as iMessage or the Phone app. Here’s how to set it for yourself:

Before you go ahead, keep in mind that this update is currently only available for users enrolled in the platform’s beta program. Once ensured, you can navigate to the Settings app on your iPhone. Next, scroll to find Apps and then tap on it to expand the list. When you’re done, you will find the option of selecting the Phone or Messaging app, wherein you will be able to change the default app to WhatsApp.

When will this update be available to everyone?

For now, only users enrolled in WhatsApp’s beta for iOS (v25.8.10.74) can enjoy this update. It is not currently clear as to when the company plans to make it available to everyone. If that’s not all, it is also currently limited to iOS users as of today.

The move comes as a part of Apple’s latest policy and opens up the otherwise traditionally closed ecosystem to users. This significant shift marks a great change for iOS users and keeps us hopeful for what is to come in the near future. For more, subscribe to Unboxed by Croma.
