Say goodbye to smelly clothes

How to keep your laundry fresh during the monsoon season

While the monsoon brings much-needed respite with the rain after summer, it can disrupt your laundry routine all the same, with its unpredictable weather patterns. Keeping laundry fresh is especially challenging during this season, due to your clothes being damp all the time.

Mould, mildew, and bacteria thrive in damp environments, and clothes that don’t dry properly can become breeding grounds for these unpleasant and possibly harmful organisms. That can mean irritated skin, allergies, or even trouble breathing.

On the flip side, fresh laundry reduces the chance of health issues, and not to mention, also keeps you comfy. To help you with the same, we put together this little guide to help you keep your laundry fresh at all times this monsoon season. Read on.

How to keep your laundry fresh

Here are a few easy ways to keep your clothes clean and smelling good, no matter how much it may rain.

1. Quick wash and maximise drying:

The most important aspect of keeping your clothes clean and pleasant-smelling throughout this period, is to make sure you wash them right away and dry them effectively. Don’t let damp clothes sit in your laundry basket. Wash them as soon as possible. Especially rain-soaked items, to prevent mould and mildew growth. Use your washing machine‘s extra spin cycle to get rid of excess moisture, which also significantly speeds up drying time.

2. Creative indoor drying ideas:

When it comes to drying, get creative with your drying methods, because sun-drying might not always be an option. Set up a drying rack indoors with a fan to get the air circulating. A dehumidifier can also help a lot, with the high humidity and speed up the drying process. If you can, place your drying rack near a heater (but keep a safe distance) to gently dry your clothes, especially thicker items like towels.

3. Freshness boosters:

To keep things smelling fresh, use scented detergents or fabric softeners that have antibacterial properties to fight off odor-causing bacteria. You can even try using natural moth repellents like camphor balls or sachets in your closet or drawers to stop mould and mildew and leave a nice, subtle scent.

4. Tackle stubborn odours:

If you’re dealing with stubborn odours, add a cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle. Vinegar is great for getting rid of lingering smells.

5. Use a portable steamer for quick drying:

Lastly, consider using a portable clothes steamer for clothes that take too long to dry indoors. A quick steam session removes wrinkles and freshens clothes up in a flash.

By following these tips, you can keep your laundry fresh and comfortable throughout the monsoon season. Remember, fresh clothes not only feel good but also contribute to your well-being in high humidity.
