Your air conditioner doesn't have to be an eyesore

How to integrate an AC into your home décor

Imagining a routine without certain home and kitchen appliances seems almost unthinkable. Whether it is a television, refrigerator or an air conditioner — they’re practically a part of our interior planning and rightfully so. But if you’re living in a rented apartment or are planning to set up a home, it becomes all the more important to ensure your gadgets don’t stick out like a sore thumb in your flat.

While air conditioners have evolved from looking like unwieldy box appliances to elegant, sleek machines, there are still chances of it looking out of place in your room. But if you’re struggling to make your AC unit look like a part of your interior, we have some tips for you to keep in mind. Check them out below:

5 ways to blend an AC unit into your home interiors

If you’re the kind that prefers minimalistic decor over an aesthetically cluttered space, there are a few ways to conceal it. Here’s what you should do.

1. Have a cloth or sheer curtain
2. Surround it with a bookcase
3. Install wall decorations around the unit
4. Pick the right colour for your AC
5. Consider a centralised air conditioning system

1. Have a cloth or sheer curtain

An AC unit will typically installed on a height or, in certain cases, on the floor. That said, while it is not easy to hide an appliance this big, it can always covered with a cloth or sheer curtain. A lightweight fabric, for instance, will not obstruct the airflow and still be able to mask its presence in your room. However, it is best to keep in mind that this could compromise the cooling efficiency of your AC.

2. Surround it with a bookcase

Building a closed bookcase around your AC unit can help draw attention away from it. For great results, ensure your book rack is the same shade as your air conditioning unit so it doesn’t stand out.

You can choose to keep it open or install a door around it. However, it is crucial to keep the door open while using your AC. Once you’re through using it, you can shut the door and it will almost be like it doesn’t exist.

3. Install wall decorations around the unit

If you’re worried about your air conditioning unit garnering unwanted attention, there’s a good way to divert it. Install art or wall decorations around your AC or on the wall where it is installed. If your AC has certain accents or textures, like the Godrej Eon Vogue AC, you keep that in mind to pick your art accordingly.

4. Pick the right colour for your AC

If you have the liberty to purchase a new AC unit for your space, it is always a good idea to pick the colours according to the decided palette. Brands today have introduced a variety of shades, including metallic, red, textured, or monochrome black or white, that you can choose based on your decor plan. While most of these may just be accents, they will still add a subtle touch of class to your room.

5. Consider a centralised air conditioning system

If you completely want your AC to be out of sight, a centralised air conditioning system might be your best bet. The air vents for these units can often be a part of your wall, and they blend in fairly well with a false ceiling.

However, this option is only advisable if you have a large area that you might want to cool. Split ACs are always preferred owing to their features and price tag.

Hiding your AC unit (inside or outside) may require you to think outside the ‘box’ (no pun intended!) or a little creativity. Nevertheless, choosing a solution that suits your home and the appliance best should be a good thumb rule for you to begin.
