How to get your missing Google Maps timeline data back

Google Maps has a wonderful feature that allows you to, quite literally, go back in time. Dubbed a ‘timeline’, users can use this to revisit the places they’ve navigated to in the past and check out fun details about it. Whether you stepped out to run an errand or were on your dream road trip, Google gives you everything you need to know from the time taken, kilometres covered, stops on the way, and even your mode of transport.

Not too long ago, Google announced its decision to move this feature to Drive instead of your device. However, it wasn’t until recently that some users complained of missing timeline data ranging between months to years. If you’re one of the few who has this issue, here’s what you can do to fix it.

How to restore Google Maps data

A technical glitch has caused several Google Maps users to lose their timeline data. While the company hasn’t announced how many were affected or the cause behind it, there is a way to get this back, provided you have enabled Drive backup. Here are a few steps to follow:

Step 1: On your smartphone, launch the Google Maps app

Step 2: Tap on your profile photo located in the top right corner

Step 3: Within the sidebar, locate Timeline; tap on it

Step 4: If you see a Cloud icon on the top of your page, tap on it to restore your data

Unfortunately, if you haven’t enabled backups, there is no way to get your timeline data back.

To prevent any loss in the future, it is always best to have your data backed up on Google Drive. Here’s how to go about it:

Step 1: First, update your Google Maps app to the latest version

Step 2: Launch it on your phone and tap on your profile photo in the top right corner

Step 3: Once you select Timeline in the sidebar, you will find a Cloud icon with a cross on it; tap on it to enter backup settings

Step 4: Toggle the switch on to enable backups; note that you may be asked to enter your password or go through two-factor authentication to switch this setting on for yourself

Once done, you will find that information on your timeline data being saved to Google Drive via your device.

Google is known to switch up its settings based on the growing privacy concerns around data collection. This is why it’s always a good idea to review your account settings from time to time.
