How to get your iPhone ready for the iOS 17.4 update

The newest iOS update is right around the corner, and a lot of reports suggest that it is due to bring much-anticipated changes to the iPhone. From implementing crucial updates, such as EU regulatory requirements, to having cute new emojis, there’s a lot in store for users this time around.

If you’ve only recently purchased the new Apple iPhone 15 series, you probably can tap ‘install’ almost blindly. However, for the rest, it’s always a good idea to have a few practices in place before going ahead with the update. Read on.

Preparing your iPhone for the iOS update

Check out these few quick steps that you can look at to ensure your iOS update goes through smoothly.

1. Ensure your iPhone is eligible for the update
2. Uninstall old apps and photos
3. Create a backup for your data

1. Ensure your iPhone is eligible for the update

Newer models probably don’t have to think twice before updating their phones. However, if you’re using an older variant, it is best to make a note if it can accommodate or install the update. Another good thumb rule is to check if your iPhone is currently running an updated version. If it can, there’s a good possibility it will be able to update to the latest version as well.

But if you’re still unsure, check out the list of iPhones that are qualified for the iOS 17.4 update:

– iPhone 15 series
– iPhone 14 series
– iPhone 13 series
– iPhone 12 series
– iPhone 11 series
– iPhone XS
– iPhone XS Max
– iPhone XR
– iPhone SE (2nd generation or later)

2. Uninstall old apps and photos

Older variants tend to run out of space and it’s never a bad idea to clean up storage now and then to ensure there’s enough for an update. Revisit existing apps on your iPhone to see if any of them are redundant or barely used. It is also recommended you update these apps, as older versions can cause glitches or issues.

Note that your iPhone usually requires 2GB to 3GB of free space to carry out the update. Anything less would require it to push itself and delete apps to create space for the file. However, this process is usually a slow and painstaking one.

3. Create a backup for your data

Lastly, if you aren’t already backing up your iPhone data, make sure you do so before the update. Apart from keeping your files online on iCloud, you can also keep the required files on your desktop or laptop in case you lose access to either of these versions. And finally, don’t forget to have sufficient charge on your iPhone before you let it update.

Once you have these three steps in place, you will be able to download and install the latest iOS update with ease. It is crucial to note that the initial version of this update may have bug fixes; it is best to keep note of them as and when you make space for yourself.
