In many parts of the world, summer months are synonymous with hardships, but they don’t have to be. Depending on where you live, summer months can be mildly warm or unbearably hot and humid. This is where many of us take the help of appliances to make life easier. This includes fans, air coolers, ACs, and even refrigerators.
That said, if you’re someone who only uses some (or all) of these appliances in the peak summer, then chances are you’re not prepared for the hot months ahead. This is why in today’s blog we will be sharing some tips on how to prepare your apartment ahead of the summer season. We will also look at some other ways to help keep your room/apartment cooler.
Cleaning your appliances
If you haven’t used your appliances in a long time, don’t expect to just plug them in and expect peak results. Many appliances like fans and air conditioners will require some cleaning before they can be used effectively as a cooling solution.

While a damp cloth rub should be enough to clean fans, appliances like ACs and air coolers will require more effort. Air coolers will need to be cleaned from the inside, while split ACs will need a cleaning session for the external unit also, if you didn’t have it covered for the past few months.
Servicing and repairs
Servicing appliances which haven’t been used in a long time is also an important step. Air coolers may need a replacement for the honeycomb pads, Refrigerators and ACs may need a trip by the technician to check for coolant levels and other issues. Preparation is key here, because the last thing you need is your refrigerator or AC failing in the middle of a hot day.
Stocking up on refreshments
While appliances will help you with keeping your apartment cool, you can do your bit by keeping your favourite refreshments stocked up. This can be juice boxes, ice cream, soft drinks or even simply ice cubes. You can also invest in ice-candy makers to make your own ice lollies throughout the summer season.
Tuning up your home
While your cooling appliances are responsible for turning down the temperature in your house, you can make them more efficient by making small fixes and changes around key areas of your home. For instance, finding and fixing any gaps or cracks in your walls will prevent cooler air from leaving your room.
The correct placement of appliances is also crucial in determining how efficient they’ll actually be when in use. Air Coolers, for example, must always be placed close to an open window with access to fresh air. Refrigerators need to be placed at a safe distance from nearby walls (and other appliances) for them to work properly.
Other measures
There’s a lot of other smaller changes you can make around the house to help keep things cool. Investing in blackout curtains will keep direct sunlight from turning your room into a live example of the greenhouse effect.

Switching from halogen lamps to LED bulbs will release lesser heat within the room after sunset. Even using cotton clothes, which are more breathable, will keep you cool during the hottest parts of the day.
These are some ways in which you can prepare your home for summer. The right combination of appliances and other smaller changes should help you make the hotter months of the year much more comfortable.
