Stay safe this monsoon with these essential tips for your water purifier

How to get your water purifier ready for monsoon

One of the major concerns during the monsoon season is ensuring safe and clean drinking water for you and your family. Heavy rains, flooding, and overflowing drainages can contaminate water sources. Therefore, it is advisable to purchase a water purifier prior to the start of the rainy season. If you already have a water purifier, then you should make sure it is ready for the monsoon. Here are some simple tips to ensure safe and clean drinking water from your water purifier this rainy season.

1. Check the water source

The first thing you need to do to prepare your water purifier for the monsoon is inspect the water source. If you have a municipal water connection, you can check the pipeline for leaks and damages to prevent contamination.

If you get water from a borewell or any other groundwater source, you need to check whether the area surrounding the source is clean and free from debris.

2. Clean the water purifier

Inspect the water purifier carefully for visible signs of damage or wear and tear. You can clean the purifier’s exterior with a damp cloth and mild detergent. If you wish to clean the water purifier from the inside, you will have to go through its manual for disassembling and cleaning parts like pre-filters, filters, and the storage tank. Depending on their type and condition, these components may require rinsing, soaking in cleaning solutions, or complete replacement. If you are not sure about how to clean the internal components, you can always approach a professional for assistance.

3. Replace the filters

The pre-filters, as the name suggests, are the first line of filters in the purification process. It removes larger particles, sediments, and suspended solids from the water. On the other hand, the main filters remove specific contaminants from the water. For instance, the RO (reverse osmosis) member eliminates salts, heavy metals, and minerals, the UF (ultrafiltration) member removes bacteria, viruses, and other micro-organisms, the activated carbon filter reduces chlorin, organic compounds, and the UV filter disinfects water by killing bacteria and viruses.

Over a period of time, these filters may not function efficiently as they get clogged with dirt and impurities. Hence, it is recommended to replace the filters every 6 to 12 months, as per the usage and guidelines of the manufacturer. It would be ideal to check the condition of the filters and replace them if required before the monsoon.

4. Sanitise the water storage tank

If your water purifier has a water storage tank, it is recommended to sanitise it before the monsoon. Stored water can become a breeding ground for bacteria and algae if it remains unused for an extended period of time. In order to sanitise it, empty the water tank, thoroughly clean it with a mild detergent and sanitise it with a chlorine solution or as recommended by the manufacturer.

5. Check electrical connections

Inspect all the electric connections of your water purifier for any signs of damage or wear. Make sure that the purifier is plugged into a grounded outlet with no exposed wires. It is recommended to keep the water purifier at an elevation so that its electrical components are not submerged in water in case of flooding.

6. Inspect for leaks

Inspect all the connections, joints, and pipes for any signs of leakage. Tighten any loose fittings and replace damaged pipes or connectors. Leaks can not only cause wastage of water, but they can also lead to contamination.

7. Ensure proper drainage

Ensure that your water purifier’s water outlet is clear and unobstructed. A clogged drainpipe can cause water to backflow, leading to potential leaks, contamination, and damage to the purifier. Hence, it is advisable to check and clean the drainage system before the monsoon to prevent such problems.
