Quickly and easily communicate with large groups using WhatsApp Channels

How to create a WhatsApp Channel

It’s been three months since WhatsApp Channels made their way to our shores in September. This nifty feature, (which also happens to be available on Instagram) is an extremely simple way for an individual or organisation to communicate with a large group of people, quickly and easily.

So we thought we’d put together this little guide on just how to create a WhatsApp Channel, and also tell you just why you may want to try them out.

Here’s how to create a WhatsApp Channel

Follow these steps to make your own WhatsApp Channel.

1. First off, ensure WhatsApp on your device is updated to the latest version. To ensure the same, head on over to the Play Store on Android smartphones, or the App Store on iPhones, and check for updates.

2. Now, open WhatsApp on your phone and head to the “Updates” tab.

3. Here, tap on the ‘plus’ icon below the status updates, and hit “Create channel.’

4. Now, tap on “Continue.”

5. On the subsequent page, give your channel a name and add an image for the same.

6. Once done, tap on “Create channel.”

7. This should bring you to your channel’s page. Here, tap on the option that says “channel link” on the top right corner, and select one of the four options there. These include sending the link to your contacts via WhatsApp, sharing the link to your status, copying the link to your clipboard, or sharing the link via other apps.

8. That’s it, you’re all set! You can now send the link to your contacts, who can then send it ahead to theirs to follow.

Why you may want to try WhatsApp Channels out

Channels on WhatsApp, in essence, are a one-way medium of communication an individual or organization can use to connect with a large group. Within these channels, they can share anything from written messages to images and videos, polls and events, or even stickers.

The feature has several uses, including the dissemination of news, advertising, and even building communities that share a common interest.

As the owner of a Channel, you can block screenshots and even prevent followers from forwarding your updates. Moreover, you can also decide who can or cannot join their channel, as well as whether you want your channel to show up in the enhanced directory or not. The enhanced directory, FYI, helps you find filtered channels to follow according to the country you reside in.
