Cleaning your dishwasher is simpler than you thought

How to clean a dishwasher the right way

We all rely on our dishwashers to take care of the dirty dishes, but what about taking care of the dishwasher itself? Just like your dishes, your dishwasher needs regular cleaning to function properly and prevent the buildup of grime and odours. Over time, food scraps, soap scum, grease, and hard water deposits can collect inside, reducing its efficiency and potentially leading to unpleasant smells.

The good news is that cleaning your dishwasher is a simple process that takes minimal effort for a big payoff! With a few simple steps and maintaining a dishwasher cleaning routine with readily available household ingredients, you can restore your dishwasher’s performance and hygiene, ensuring clean dishes and a fresh-smelling kitchen for years to come.

How to clean a dishwasher

To keep your dishwasher squeaky clean and shining, just follow these simple steps for a quick touch-up or a thorough clean:

1. Clean up food bits after every wash

1. After each cycle, take a moment to clear out any food leftovers you spot. These are often the reason for bad smells.

2. Look at the bottom rack, check the filter, screen, and heating element for any crumbs. Just use your fingers or a paper towel to get rid of them.

2. Wipe away door dirt weekly

1. Once a week, wipe down the inside of your dishwasher door and the area under it with a wet microfiber cloth or sponge. Make sure to clean the edges, handle, and controls too.

2. Next, focus on the rubber seal around the door. Dip a soft toothbrush in warm, soapy water or a mild cleaner and gently scrub any dirt or food debris.

3. Finally, clean the detergent and rinse aid dispensers. Remove any leftover detergent or buildup and wipe everything clean with a damp cloth. Avoid harsh cleaners, especially for stainless steel interiors.

3. Weekly clean the filter

1. Clean the filter located beneath the bottom spray arm on a weekly basis. All you need to do is remove the filter and rinse it thoroughly under hot running water. You can use a soft toothbrush to gently scrub the mesh screen and frame, then rinse again.

2. Then, securely lock the filter back into place. Never operate the dishwasher with a missing or unlocked filter, as it can damage the machine.

4. Clean your dishwasher thoroughly once a month

Once a month, remember to deep clean your dishwasher. Use a dishwasher cleaner to get rid of hidden particles, mineral buildup, and detergent residue. These cleaners have special ingredients that dissolve and remove trapped food and grease.

5. Give the outside a shine

Polish the exterior occasionally. Use a stainless-steel cleaner every 45 days to remove fingerprint smudges. This keeps your dishwasher shiny and protected from dirt and smudges.

So, by incorporating these simple cleaning practices into your routine, you can ensure that your dishwasher operates efficiently, leaving your dishes sparkling clean and your kitchen smelling fresh.
