How to create and reset a UPI PIN

If you’ve recently bought something online or even in your local store, you might have seen a payment option for UPI or a QR code that lets you pay using UPI. Launched by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) in 2016, the Unified Payments Interface, better known as UPI, has become the new standard for sending and receiving money directly between bank accounts. While online payment options have existed for a while, UPI stands out because it makes money transfers instantaneous and effortless.

The payment interface allows you to send and receive any amount instantly, from a quick coffee payment to a rent transfer. Plus, UPI doesn’t require sharing sensitive bank details, keeping your financial information secure. If you’re interested in creating your own UPI ID and PIN to send and receive money, we’ll show you how to create your own UPI ID and PIN (or how to reset your existing PIN) below.

How to set a UPI PIN

Before you create your own UPI PIN, you’ll first need to create a UPI ID. This unique identifier, typically in the format “yourname@bankname”, helps identify you on the UPI network. Here’s a step-by-step guide to creating a UPI ID and setting up your PIN. You can also use this guide to reset your existing UPI PIN if you’ve forgotten it or simply want a new one.

1) Download and install a UPI app:
Choose and download a UPI app of your choice such as Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, and BHIM from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.

2) Register on the app:
Open the app and complete the registration process by entering your mobile number. You’ll receive a one-time password (OTP) on your phone to verify the number.

3) Link your bank account:
Once registered, find the option to link your bank account within the app. Select your bank from the list provided by the app.

4) Set up UPI ID (and PIN):
After linking your bank account, the app will prompt you to set up a UPI ID. This acts as your virtual address for payments. Choose a UPI ID that’s easy to remember. It can be a combination of letters and numbers.

5) Set UPI PIN:
You’ll need to set a UPI PIN to secure your UPI transactions. This PIN acts as your password for approving transactions. The app will ask you to enter the last 6 digits of your debit card linked to the bank account and its expiry date for verification. You’ll then receive an OTP on your registered mobile number. Enter the OTP to confirm. Finally create a 4 or 6-digit UPI PIN of your choice. Remember this PIN!

How to reset your UPI PIN

If you’ve forgotten your UPI PIN by any chance, you can easily reset it within your UPI app. The steps might vary slightly depending on the app you use, but the general process involves:

1) Go to the UPI settings section in your app on your smartphone.

2) Find the option to “Reset UPI PIN” or similar.

3) You’ll likely be asked to enter your linked bank account details (mobile number registered with the bank).

4) The app will send an OTP for verification. Enter the OTP.

5) You’ll then be able to create a new UPI PIN.

And voila! You’re done. This is how you can either create or reset a UPI PIN.
