Personalise your phone: A guide to changing font styles on Android and iOS devices

Smartphones are uniquely personal items that speak volumes about you, the owner. One neat trick you can use to make them seem even more personal is by using a custom font that reflects who you are. This is easier on Android than on iOS, but both platforms do offer some degree of customisation that you can take advantage of.

Changing font styles on iOS

Apple’s iOS platform is much more restricted than Android when it comes to third-party customisation. While Apple lets you install fonts on an iOS device, these fonts can only be used in documents. Apple does, however, let you adjust the size, colour, and weight of the fonts. Here’s how you do that:

1. Open Settings

2. Tap Accessibility

3. Tap Display & Text Size

4. Select ‘Bold Text’ to increase the weight of the font

5. Select ‘Larger Text’ and then ‘Larger Accessibility Fonts’

6. Use the slider to adjust font size to your liking.

You can also change the lock screen font by doing the following:

1. Lock the iPhone

2. Press and hold the screen

3. Tap ‘Customise’

4. Tap to select text you’d like to modify

5. A small window will pop up from which you can select multiple fonts, adjust the font size, and the font colour

6. Once you’ve modified the fonts to your liking, tap done to save your lock screen customisation

Changing font styles on Android

By default, Android doesn’t give you options to adjust your system font. You do, however, have two options here: Some manufacturers like Samsung and OnePlus let you switch between a handful of pre-installed fonts, or you could go with a third-party launcher that is fully customisable. For the former, it would be best to refer to the manufacturer website as the process varies from device to device.

To customise the fonts via a third-party launcher:

The Play Store has a collection of custom launchers to choose from. These launchers replace your home screen and app drawer UI elements with something new and customisable. Here are some popular options that we can recommend:

1. Microsoft Launcher: Made by Microsoft, this launcher features a great deal of customisation in the form of custom fonts, themes, new UI elements, icons, and more.

2. Nova Launcher: Available with a tonne of customasation and features, this launcher completely changes the look and feel of your phone.

3. GO launcher: You get access to custom themes and wallpapers.

4. Smart Launcher 6: Very customisable, this launcher stands out for the degree of customisation if offers for the phone’s UI as well as for system fonts.

Changing fonts and customising the visual experience to your liking is quite simple. Use this article as a starting point for your journey down the customisation rabbit hole and don’t forget to have fun along the way. Oh, and we’d love to see the results of your experimentation!
