How a man recovered his stolen car using an AirTag

We’re no strangers to the utility of a smart tracker, such as the Apple AirTag or the Samsung Galaxy SmartTag2. Whether it’s keeping track of your phone and wallet, or perhaps your car keys, or even your pets. Not just that. They also help you keep track of your luggage at an airport on vacation, or maybe help you find your car if you forgot where you parked it at the mall. Speaking of cars though, in a rather bizarre incident, it turns out a man in Canada recovered his stolen car using an AirTag.

According to a report from a local news media outlet in Canada, Sameer Mansoor got out of his car after parking it in the driveway in a hurry, to tend to his sick two-year-old son. In his haste, he forgot to close the driver’s side window of the car. The next morning, as his brother was heading out, he noticed the car wasn’t in the driveway.

Now, Mansoor, six months ago, happened to fit an AirTag in his car, after having heard of similar stories of stolen vehicles having been recovered using Air Tags in Toronto. Upon checking on the Find My app, it turns out his car was at a motel just down the street. He called 911, and the police recovered Mansoor’s car along with all of his belongings intact.

How AirTags can be used to keep track of your belongings

Here, it becomes important to understand just how an AirTag helps one do what Mansoor managed to.

The maximum Bluetooth connectivity range of an AirTag happens to be 33 feet or 10 metres. What does one do when it goes out of this range, then? Well, in such cases, the Find My app can be used to figure out the general area one’s AirTag and the belongings it is attached to, are in.

Once in range, one case use Bluetooth to bring them closer still. Following that, to pinpoint the exact location of the AirTag, one can then make use of the short-range ultra-wideband capabilities on their devices.

This goes to show that AirTags, or any smart trackers for that matter, are a great investment, costing relatively very little, for the kind of losses they can protect one against.
