Retro, chic, and pink: HMD’s Barbie flip phone is finally available in India

Almost a year after announcing its partnership with Mattel, HMD has finally debuted the Barbie flip phone, much to the delight of fans and pink lovers around the world. With an all-pink, retro design, the nostalgic feature phone is aimed at Barbie fans and collectors, and also for those looking to cut down on digital distractions.

The company, via a post on X (formerly Twitter) recently made an announcement stating the phone is ready to hit the markets. In fact, the Indian variant mirrors the global version with its Barbie-themed, pink interface and its iconic design. Excited to get your hands on one? Here’s what you need to know.

HMD Barbie phone: Key features and specifications

To begin with, the flip phone comes is available only in pink. The brand mentions how its 1.77-inch QQVGA outer screen in the front can also be used as a mirror for all the times you want a quick touch-up! While there’s no front camera on the phone, the brand has thrown in a 0.3MP rear camera for visually aesthetic ‘Y2K Instagram photos’.

The phone gets two replaceable back covers — one features bright swirls of the Totally Hair Barbie (1992) doll and the other with a vintage ‘shooting heart‘ design. Moreover, it comes with a colourful, beaded lanyard with attachable charms.

In addition to that, the flip phone gets a bespoke user interface and users can choose between a bunch of cute Barbie wallpapers and app icons based on their whims. HMD also stresses on the importance of a digital detox and has included ‘Digital Balance tips’, ‘Barbie Meditation‘ mode as well as self-care reminders for its users.

Apart from this, the phone comes with several custom Barbie-themed ringtones to choose from; including ‘floating’, ‘Coastal’, ‘DreamHouse’, ‘Azure Barbie’ and ‘Surf Chimes’. Lastly, there are a couple of fun easter eggs added into the interface with key Barbie dates and words.

For starters, the phone greets you with a ‘Hi Barbie’ upon booting up. Next, when you type BARBIE by pressing *#227243# you get Barbie wallpapers. And lastly, you can have greetings from Ken by typing *#ken# or *#536# and Malibu sounds when you press *#malibu#.

The device comes with a 1,450mAh removable battery and a USB Type-C charging port. The brand claims this can draw up to nine hours of talk time. Other features include an MP3 player, Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity and 64MB RAM, 128MB internal storage with an expandable memory of up to 32GB with microSD card.

HMD Barbie flip phone can be purchased at Rs 7,999 and is currently available on the brand’s official website.
