Here’s why Samsung has issued a ‘critical update’ for all Galaxy users

Samsung’s Galaxy series has been in the spotlight for a while now, especially after the brand unveiled its flagship S24 series last month. In fact, Galaxy smartphone users have also begun to receive updates that bring the magic of generative AI to older models.

That said, in a recent statement, Samsung warned users to check for a new firmware update that should be treated as a critical security patch. So, if you’re using a Samsung Galaxy phone, here’s what you should know:

Samsung Galaxy security update: What's there to know

Samsung rolled out an urgent March update for Galaxy S24 users and has mentioned that users should update their smartphones at the earliest upon having received it. According to the Android Security Bulletin for the month, two of the vulnerabilities are critical.

The report further states how one could potentially lead to remote code execution and the other an escalation of privilege. In simpler terms, this could compromise your smartphone’s safety, and a hacker could potentially exploit your device with malware owing to the vulnerabilities.

However, Samsung hasn’t rolled out the updated for every Galaxy smartphone just yet. As per a statement by the brand, the update is currently limited to carrier-locked Galaxy S23 units only. It will bring the March 2024 update to fix dozens of security issues found in the previous software versions.

If you don’t own a carrier-locked variant, you might have to wait a little while longer for the security patch. Samsung has also assured that routine OS updates will include up-to-date security patches and will only gradually roll out to older models.

The delivery time, however, will change from variant to variant. The update has currently been rolled out to US users and Europe, along with other regions, are expected to follow suit.
