You might assume generative artificial intelligence is only limited to text and image generation. That’s not neccesarily true, though.

Just recently, Google unveiled a game-changing generative AI tool for its Chrome browser, referred to as the Search Generative Experience (SGE). Read on to find out what it can do for you, and how to use it as well.

What does the SGE tool do?

Aimed at readers, the SGE tool basically summarises web articles and generates short points related to the same. This will help users who are in a rush avoid having to endlessly scroll through long articles and save time. As a bonus, it also helps reduce screen time.

These generated points can also act as a table of contents, with jumplinks to take users directly to the content they were looking for. Additionally, there is an “explore on page” option, wherein one can view the questions an article answers and go to the section directly. That’s not all, though. Using the tool, one can also hover over certain terms in an article and see their definitions and related diagrams, if any.

The AI-backed SGE tool also allows users to view code snippets and save them. It also has programming assistance, which helps users debug generated code, therefore enabling users to both, better understand complex topics, improve their vocabulary as well as coding skills, and more.

Microsoft’s Bing Chat is the only other tool that comes close to offering something like this. This tool, on the Edge app, allows users to summarise articles they’re reading, as well as ask any questions they may have related to same.

How to access the SGE tool?

Here’s how to access the Google SGE tool on your laptop or desktop.

1. On your laptop or desktop, open the Google Chrome browser, and make sure you’re signed into your Chrome account.

2. Head on over to Google’s website, and select “Labs” denoted by a beaker, on the top-right of the page.

3. Tap on “Get started” and on the SGE while browsing card, toggle the tool on.

4. Accept the terms and conditions, and you’re all set.

Here’s how Android and iOS users can access the feature.

1. Ensure your Google app is updated to the latest version, and that you’re signed into your Google account on the same.

2. Tap on the “Labs” icon on the top-left corner, denoted by a beaker, and tap on “Get started.”

3. Scroll and find the SGE while browsing card and toggle it on.

4. Accept the terms of service for the tool, and you’re good to go.

Bear in mind though, SGE is still in an early experiment stage in Search Labs and is available only in the US for now. It is expected to be rolled out for other international markets at a later date. Also, it may not work for all web pages, including those that have any content behind a paywall.
