How to keep your laptop safe this monsoon

Our laptops are some of the most useful productivity tools we own today. They take care of work, entertainment and everything in between, and do it all while being lugged in a backpack. However, the portability aspect of laptops can put them at risk when it’s the monsoon season.

Now being the all-round computing solutions that they are, repairing a laptop can be a time-consuming and expensive task. However, there are ways to protect a laptop, prevent damage and increase your recovery options when the weather is out to get you. Here’s a few ways to keep your laptop safe this monsoon.

Power it down

Having your laptop out in the rain is less than ideal, but what’s worse is for the laptop to actually be running at a time like this. When electronics like laptops or smartphones are exposed to liquids, damage can be minimised to an extent by avoiding the gadget from turning/staying on.

The liquid and electricity risk shorting circuits inside the laptop, causing further damage. To avoid this, simply shut down your laptop and disconnect any cables and accessories.

Invest in a waterproof bag/cover

MacBook or PC, the easiest way to keep your laptops safe is by not taking them outdoors on a rainy day. However, when that’s not an option, you can invest in a waterproof backpack or a waterproof cover for your laptop. With a layer of water-resisting material between your laptop and water, you can avoid most of the possible damage that can ruin your laptop.

Add some silica gel packets

During monsoon, rains are not your only risk. Any electronics in your bag are also exposed to moisture, which can also damage internal components. The silica gel pouches you get with some of your orders are great additions to keep in your backpack.

If you don’t have some lying around, you can buy some silica gel packets and toss them in along with your electronics. While it doesn’t guarantee 100 per cent protection, it will increase your odds of keeping the moisture away.

Backup your data

Making your laptop monsoon-proof is not just about keeping water away. It’s also about preparing for the worst, and one of the best ways you can do this is by ensuring all your data is backed up by services like iCloud, Google Drive, or OneDrive.

In case of a mishap, where your laptop comes into contact with water and needs to be repaired or replaced, a backup will keep your work documents and personal files safe and available to access from a different device. Use the cloud to beat the clouds!
