Here’s how to ‘Jam’ with Spotify’s new social listening feature

Music is great, and with the right company, it only gets better. Keeping this in mind, Spotify has introduced a social listening feature that allows 32 Spotify users to ‘Jam’ together. The best part? Premium or not, you get to enjoy this feature with your friends around the world. Here’s everything that you need to know:

How does the Spotify Jam feature work?

If you’re a Spotify Premium user, you can begin a session on your app. You can find this feature once you click the three-dot menu on your Spotify app, or the speaker icon, that leads to an option titled ‘Start a Jam’. As a host, you can manage who gets added to the Jam and add or remove members as per requirement. Apart from selecting tracks, the host can also give a participant the ability to change or remove any track they like.

How does one join a Spotify Jam session?

Hosts looking to add users to a Jam session can go about it by sharing a link with their contacts. Additionally, if your device supports it, you can tap two Bluetooth-enabled smartphones or tablets to get added to one. Another way to be a part of a Jam session is to request a QR code from the host. And if you share the same Wi-Fi network as them, your Spotify app will prompt you to join an active Jam in your area.

Once you’re added to a Jam, you will be able to see the profiles of the participants next to the tracks they have added to the queue. Moreover, Spotify even takes into account the group listening preferences and comes up with suggestions best suited to everyone’s taste. This technology was previously also observed in Spotify’s Blend app, which has helped several users create personalised, ‘blended’ playlists. While the feature comes at no extra cost to Premium subscribers, there are reports of Spotify looking at a possible price increase for its Premium subscribers in the future.
