Here’s how central AC systems work and how to maintain them

A common way to cool commercial establishments, whether supermarkets, malls, or entire office buildings and even large residences these days, is central air conditioning (AC) systems. These systems work by dispersing cool air around an area via a network of ducts. Wondering how? Read on.

Parts which help a central AC work

Here’s all you need to know about the parts using which a central AC system works.

1. Thermostat

The thermostat is the brain of the AC. Using this, one can set their preferred temperature, and when the temperature inside reaches that point, it does the job of maintaining the same.

2. Air handler

The air handler is in charge of moving cooled air around the area which the AC covers. A blower fan pulls warm air from the return ducts into the room. The evaporator coil then cools this warm air and dehumidifies it.

3. Evaporator coil

The evaporator coil is an essential part of the air handler. The part largely consists of a system of tubes and fins filled with refrigerant. The refrigerant in the coil absorbs heat from the air from your home, cooling it as it passes over the cold coil.

4. Condenser unit

The heat absorbed from the inside air is released by the condenser unit outside the area building where the central AC is being used.

The evaporator coil sends high-pressure refrigerant into the condenser coil, condensing it back into a liquid condition while releasing heat. To help the condenser coil dissipate heat, the fan blows air over it.

5. Ductwork

The cooled air from the air handler is distributed to various areas wherever the central AC is being used via a network of pipes or tubes called ducts. The supply ducts compel the cooled air into each room’s vents and registers. The warm air pulled out from a given room is transported to the air handler via the return duct.

6. Air filtration units

Air filtration units are often found in central ACs to enhance interior air quality. Filters are put in the return ducts to stop dust, pollen, and other airborne particles from recirculating in one’s home or office. To ensure optimal airflow and for the system to be effective, regular filter maintenance is essential.

Maintaining your central AC

Routine maintenance is necessary to ensure your central air conditioner performs at its best and lasts you for as long as possible. You can ensure that your central air conditioner runs efficiently for the years to come by following these easy steps and maintaining a regular maintenance schedule.

1. Clear debris from outdoor unit

Your central air conditioner’s outside unit may gather dirt, leaves, grass, and other debris over time, limiting circulation and reducing its effectiveness. To keep the appliance performing at its best, look into it frequently and remove any debris.

2. Clean or replace air filters

Cleaning or replacing the air filters regularly is one of the most crucial aspects of AC maintenance. Dirty filters can impede airflow, reduce effectiveness, and also result in poor indoor air quality. Every month, check your filters and clean or replace them as necessary.

3. Maintain adequate airflow

Ensure that the area around the indoor and outdoor units is clear of anything that hinders ventilation. To ensure proper airflow, keep your furnishings, carpets, and drapes away from vents, and cut any plants or shrubs near the outside unit.

4. Check and clean the condenser coil

The outdoor unit’s condenser coils, which are responsible for heat transfer, can accumulate dirt and debris and see efficiency over time. Periodically check them for debris and dirt accumulation and clean them with a soft brush or a vacuum to remove them.

A central AC system, therefore, works when a number of components work in harmony with each other. These ACs make for an excellent investment if you want effective and sustained cooling in large spaces.
