The HDMI Forum has announced the launch of a new HDMI standard next month, a day before CES 2025 kicks-off. The new HDMI standard is believed to be labelled as HDMI 2.2, a successor to HDMI 2.1, which has been a standard for all desktops and laptops since 2017.
HDMI 2.2 is speculated to offer higher resolution support and better speeds. Here’s everything you need to know about the next HDMI standard, which is due for release at CES 2025.
What we know so far about the HDMI 2.2 standard
According to HDMI Forum, the next HDMI or High-Definition Multimedia interface standard, i.e., believed to be the HDMI 2.2 standard, will launch on January 6, 2025. That’s a day ahead of CES (Consumer Electronics Show) 2025. HDMI 2.2’s launch will be the big thing, as the existing HDMI 2.1 standard has been around for about seven years. Today, most new PC hardware or laptops come with HDMI 2.1 support.
HDMI 2.1 has received lettered upgrades since 2017, with the most recent one being the HDMI 2.1b standard in 2023, which offers bandwidths of up to 48Gbps and a resolution of 10K. That said, the next HDMI standard, HDMI 2.2 is expected to bring even better speeds and higher resolution support.
Unfortunately, the HDMI Forum hasn’t shared the exact specifications of HDMI 2.2 yet. But since its unveiling is near, we won’t have to wait for too long. What’s interesting is that the announcement of the new HDMI standard will likely be around the time of showcase of the next-gen NVIDIA and AMD graphics cards.
