If you are a gamer or a fan of the Grand Theft Auto series, you are most likely waiting for GTA 6 to launch later next year. But before the game arrives, you may get to see a GTA film, that too in theatres.
No, we are not making this up. There’s a GTA Online film and it’s releasing in theatres soon. But before you get excited, know that it’s a fan-made documentary. The documentary film is titled Grand Theft Hamlet (GTA Hamlet).
Everything you need to know about GTA Hamlet
Directed by Pinny Grylls and Sam Crane, Grand Theft Hamlet follows two struggling actors who attempted to stage William Shakespeare’s Hamlet entirely in GTA Online during the COVID-19 pandemic. The documentary shows how they call other players on their online server to watch their play.
Both actors attempted to stage a full play, however, GTA being GTA, it wasn’t easy for them to pull this off without violence. That can also be seen in a short clip of the film that shows other players trying to kill each other, creating a ruckus.
All this has been recorded and edited in a hilarious documentary film that recently won the jury award at SXSW (South by Southwest). This documentary’s U.S. and SVOD (Subscription Video on Demand) rights have now been acquired by distributer, MUBI.

The film has been selected to be screened at the BFI London Film Festival on October 15. After its screening, it will be played at the BFI Imax on October 20. Expect it to also be on some OTT platform later.
Well, we have seen games getting adapted into movies and shows or vice versa, but a game being the movie? That’s something we’ll see if at all gathers some footfalls at the theatres. While the film is scheduled to launch in 2025 for the public, its exact release date remains unknown.
So, would you be interested in watching GTA Hamlet? Or, all you want is the next GTA game to launch? Let us know in the comments below.
