Google Search will soon label AI-generated content

Google is fulfilling its commitment towards transparency with its new move that ensures users can make out the difference between a real image and an AI-generated image. The Silicon Valley firm announced that it will label AI-generated content in Search by adding a metadata to such content, mainly images.

Google has confirmed that it will integrate technology from Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) and also appoint a committee member for the same to tag content with specific metadata. This will ensure that AI-generated images contain C2PA metadata, letting users know that a particular media has been generated with AI.

So, if you were to know the difference between an AI-generated image and a real image, all you need to do to know the difference is to use Google’s ‘About this image’ feature. To do that, you would have to tap on the three dots above an image and click on the aforesaid feature. You will then know if the image is AI-generated or a real image.

The C2PA metadata integration will not only be for regular images, but also for the images in ads. Furthermore, Google may also enable the same integration for YouTube videos.

This is a great initiative by Google as it will help curb the menace of deepfakes, among other things. Unfortunately, we are yet to know the feature’s rollout timeline, but we expect it to know more soon.

Other than this, Google, along with its partners have also developed a new technical standard called Content Credentials. This will verify what device was a particular photo or video clicked on, edited from, if that’s AI-generated. Alongside these efforts, Google also has SynthID, which is an embedded watermarking tool for media across formats.
