Google Pixel gets AI features that can detect harmful apps and scam calls in real-time

After teasing a spam detection tool at the Google I/O Event, Google is finally rolling out the feature to its Pixel smartphones. According to the company, the primary aim is to level up its security measures with new tools and tackle growing online scams more effectively on Android devices.

Google introduces AI tools like Live Threat Detection and Real-time Scam Detection to its flagship phones. AI will continuously monitor apps for possible threats with Live Threat Detection while the real-time Scam Detection feature will look for suspicious questions during phone calls. Here’s how it will work:

Live threat detection feature

Traditional malware detection methods primarily scan apps when they are downloaded on smartphones. The Live Threat Detection method keeps a close watch on all the apps that are installed on the phone using AI. This constant monitoring can flesh out any suspicious activity or code.

With the help of Android Private Compute Core, this analysis is done on-device while ensuring the privacy of the user’s data. If any potential risks are detected, users will receive real-time alerts. It will trigger an “unsafe app found” notification which enables them to take action immediately.

Real-time scam detection feature

To detect scams taking place via phone calls, Google has introduced an on-device AI to look for common fraudulent indicators. If any signs of deception are discovered, the system will flag the call and advise users to hang up. This feature will look for suspicious questions or high-pressure tactics in real time to alert the user.

Using Gemini Nano, an advanced AI model, the Pixel 9 series will be able to identify potential scam calls in real-time.

Both these features are available in beta for Pixel 6 and above phones through the Google app. The company plans to expand the feature to other Android phones in the future.

With these features, Google prioritises detecting stalkerware apps that can collect sensitive information without the user’s consent. By leveraging a combination of AI and monitoring tools, these features will ensure the privacy and security of the said user’s data.
