Google Pixel devices may soon let you respond to calls with AI Replies

Answering phone calls for many of us, may be an absolute chore. Especially at work in back-to-back meetings or driving home on what seems like an endlessly long commute. Now, should you happen to use a Google Pixel device, Google may have a little something to help you out. Namely, AI replies. Intrigued? Read on.

AI Replies for Google Pixel devices: What you need to know

According to a report by 9to5Google, the company is working on a new feature called AI Replies, which will allow your Google Pixel to ask callers their purpose of calling, and craft a reply accordingly.

This is essentially an enhancement to the Call Screen feature. For the unaware, the feature lets Google Assistant ask unknown callers to disclose their identity and purpose of calling, which appears as text on your screen. You can then decide whether or not you’d like to answer the call.

The feature was spotted by the publication in strings of code on version 153 of the Phone by Google app.

Moreover, it will do so using Google’s Gemini Nano language model, to generate responses that are contextually accurate and feel more like a real, natural conversation. This is especially useful in cases where the callers are either your friends or family and you’d like to send them responses slightly more personal rather than the generic “I’ll call you right back,” or “Can’t talk now, what’s up?”

And over time, AI Replies is also expected to be able to adapt to and handle more complex conversations, as Gemini is designed to learn a user’s preferences and improve its responses in real-time.

AI Replies for Google Pixel devices: When will the feature be rolled out

Bear in mind that the AI Replies feature is still in beta, and isn’t available to everyone just yet. Moreover, it is also important to note that Google itself hasn’t mentioned anything about the feature yet – what it is, how it works, or when it will be rolled out. Therefore, you may have to wait a tad bit longer to try it out for yourselves (If and when the company decides to release it).
