Google Pixel 9 Pro design revealed with just enough changes to make it look new

Our first look at the new Pixel 9 series is officially here

Google Pixel 9 Pro design revealed with just enough changes to make it look new

We’ve been waiting for the Google Pixel 9 series for a long time, especially in India, where the flagship series will be available after years. Amidst several leaks and rumours around the upcoming Pixel smartphones, Google has now officially revealed the design of some models in the series.

These are the Pixel 9 Pro (no surprises there) and the new Pixel 9 Pro Fold, which succeeds the original Pixel Fold, and has now been included under the ‘Pixel 9 Pro’ banner. Here’s all you need to about the design, and what to expect moving forward.

Pixel 9 Pro

The Pixel 9 Pro looks like it features a glass sandwich design, complete with metallic sides, which makes it look very different from say, the Pixel 8a. The horizontal camera bar is still there on the back panel, albeit with a more circular, pill-shaped design, which looks quite different from the cyborg visor-esque rectangular camera bar of the Pixel 6, 7, and 8 series.

Inside the pill-shaped island, is another pill shaped division with three cameras inside, while a dual-tone flash module is on the right placed vertically. On the sides, we also see metallic buttons that match the colour of the sides.

This does give the phone a rather unique look that retains just enough of the design language from previous generations to help identify this as a Pixel phone, but also enough new elements to make the device look fresh.

Pixel 9 Pro Fold

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold is, in our opinion, the more intriguing of the two designs. The same pill-shaped camera island from the Pixel 9 Pro now takes a taller circular rectangle shape on the outer back panel. Unfortunately, it doesn’t extend horizontally across the back panel, and is instead situated only in the top-left corner.

The rest of the back panel looks sleek and minimal, with a small ‘G’ logo in the middle. The front outer panel has a full-size display that will let you use the Pixel 9 Pro Fold like a regular phone when it’s closed.

At the angle the phone is at in the picture, it seems like this outer display has a more standard aspect ratio, akin to many other smartphones, instead of the taller aspect ratio you see on phones like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5, and also the newer Z Fold6. Oh and yes, there’s also a centre-aligned punch-hole camera in the outer display. No Samsung-like under-display cameras here.

Unfortunately, we don’t yet have a look at the larger inner display of the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, and must wait for some more official reveals from Google to get our first look at the same.

Google plans to launch the Pixel 9 series on August 13, with the new design, and plenty of AI features. Stay tuned to Unboxed by Croma for all the action when the new phones drop.
