Google Photos was one of the first apps to get AI capabilities. The app would use people’s faces to filter photos and videos related to that person. You could slowly customise them for people, pets, places, and more. With Gemini, Google’s AI, Google Photos gets an upgrade called Ask Photos.
The new feature will make it easier for you to look for a specific memory or recall information that is a part of your gallery.
Ask Photos: Finding and Filtering search
As people’s photo gallery grows, finding what you need can lead to a lot of scrolling through numerous photos and videos – even if you look for them with the right combination of keywords.
With Ask Photos, you can ask Google Photos to look for the image in the gallery in the most natural way. For example, “Show me the best photo from each national park I’ve visited”, Google Photos will pop up the photo you require and save you the effort of scrolling.

With the help of Gemini, getting tasks done on Google Photos will get easier. For example, Ask Photos can help you curate the best snaps from your recent trip to share with your friends and family. The app will suggest top pictures and even help write a personalised caption to share on social media.
Ask Photos: How does it work?
When you ask a question, Ask Photos understands your query and forms a plan to look for the option. It is equipped to identify keywords and concepts like places, people, dates, birthday parties, etc.
The next step is to study the search results and determine which ones are most relevant or seem to be the ones you seek. Gemini’s multimodal capabilities help AI to understand what is happening in each photo. It can also read text in photos.
When the feature becomes available, it can work across all your devices like smartphones, tablets, laptops, etc. It appears as a new tab in the Photos app along with the bottom bar, replacing the ‘Search’ tab. The users can use the search feature after asking the question in Ask Photos.
It is important to note that Ask Photos is experimental so you may not get everything right. However, since AI is still learning, Ask Photos can remember details and provide better outcomes in the future.
Ask Photos has been rolled out for select users who had registered for the waitlist in early September. The feature is said to be rolled out for other users soon.
