Google Maps updated with AI features: Here’s everything you need to know

Google Maps has come a long way, since its launch in 2005. Available on both, iPhones and Android devices, as well as desktops, it is no longer simply a navigation tool, to help users get from point A to point B.  Google has given it a bunch of new features to the platform that we think, are really cool. Check them out.

Immersive View for Maps

Google Maps now gets a new feature referred to as Immersive View. This feature lets you view various landmarks, cafes, and more, under different lighting and weather conditions right on your smartphones, using AI.

As per Google, it collects and fuses together street view as well as aerial images clicked by both, users and satellites. But that’s not all. The feature is also available for navigation. What this means is now, along with the route to wherever one is going, one also has a clear idea of what to expect at turns and intersections, including traffic conditions.

Navigation is also being updated on Google Maps, to accurately reflect colours to classify areas and have more realistic depictions of landmarks. Additionally, there are also improved views of the streets and lanes to be followed while navigating to a particular place, so as to ensure one has a clearer idea of when and where to turn, change lanes, and so on.

Lens in Maps

Now, Google Lens can also be used with Maps. What this does for you is allow you to view shops, restaurants, and landmarks around you while driving or walking around, in augmented reality on your devices. So, when you need to make that last-second stop to pick up treats for a party you’re heading to, Google Map’s got you covered!

Updated search capabilities

Search on Maps has also been updated. One can now search for particular objects, and Google will search for user-uploaded images that feature them, along with their geo-tags. That is to say, if you were to search for a café that does latte art, you could search for the same on Maps, and it would tell you just where these cafes are, and what sorts of latte art they do.

Highlighted EV charging stations and HOV lanes

If you happen to own an electric vehicle, chances are you’ve been plagued by range anxiety. Well, now, in addition to showing the charging stations around you, Google Maps will also show you whether you’ll get slow, medium, or fast charging plugs there. It will also tell you when a charging station was last used, so as to give one a heads-up about whether or not it works.

Also, although it is starting with the US, Maps will soon highlight high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes. The feature is expected to be gradually rolled out worldwide in the coming months. At the same time, Google Maps will also start soon displaying speed limits while navigating, so as to ensure safer driving practices.
