Google has been in the news for introducing several changes to its services recently. From AI-driven additions to Gmail and YouTube to significant security upgrades for its Google Maps users, it hasn’t been a dull year for those who are part of its ecosystem.
If that’s not all, it also just announced a much-awaited update for its iOS users. Google is now bringing the Speedometer and Speed Limits feature to Google Maps for iPhone and Carplay. Here’s everything you need to know.
Google Maps Speedometer for iOS: What's there to know?
The Speedometer feature on Google Maps essentially displays the speed of your vehicle when you’re navigating on your way. Apart from this, the smartphone app will also let you know if you’re driving too fast based on any speed limits in your area.
While the feature may seem more or less accurate, Google cautions against relying entirely on the app and to make sure to use your vehicle’s speedometer for a more real-time reading. Apart from this, the company also mentions how ‘External factors may cause the Maps Speedometer to differ from your actual speed.’
How to enable Speedometer on Google Maps
Here’s how to enable the the Speedometer feature on Google Maps for your iPhone:
Step 1: Open the Google Maps app on your iPhone
Step 2: Tap on your profile picture and navigate to ‘Settings’
Step 3: Within ‘Settings,’ tap on ‘Navigation’ and locate ‘Map Display’
Step 4: You should be able to see new switches with ‘show speed limits’ and ‘show speedometer’
Step 5: Tap on ‘Enable’ to get started

Once enabled, the feature will change colour on the speed indicator and prompt you if you’re going too fast. This, however, will depend on the speed limit guidelines in your region or vicinity.
When will the Speedometer feature be available for iPhone users?
Google is rolling out the Speedometer feature for all iOS and Carplay users in a phased manner. If you haven’t received it yet, don’t fret, as the company seems to be gradually making it available to all users. Alternatively, make sure your Maps app is updated at all times to make the most of the new feature.
The Speedometer feature existed for Android users since 2019. Google, in the same year, also expanded it to over 40 countries after limiting it to certain markets. For more tech news and new launches, don’t forget to visit Unboxed by Croma.
