Google Maps might soon be able to tell you the entrance to buildings

Whether you’re on a road trip roughing it out or are fumbling for an entry or exit point, Google Maps is pretty much your go-to app to ensure you’re in the right place. Today, Google has equipped the smartphone app with a lot more features that set it apart from being only a navigation-led platform. Apart from directions, today, your Google Maps can tell you the AQI in your locality and even plan your next trip for you.

While Google certainly keeps implementing landmark changes, it is also testing relatively smaller updates to ensure an improved user experience. In more recent news, the company seems to be testing a feature that could let users know of an entry or exit within a building. Here is how it will potentially work for you:

Google Maps entry feature: How will this feature work

Google introduced the feature to ensure that users find the correct direction of the building while navigating. A lot of institutions, such as malls, airports or colleges, have multiple entrances or are on the opposite side of the street. In a case like this, having the right directions can direct users to the right side without causing any more confusion.

In a report published by AndroidPolice.com, Google is testing this feature on Google Maps version 11.17.0101 on its Pixel devices. What it will essentially do is highlight the entry to a building once it is selected using a white circle and entry symbol on the zoomed-in map. For now, Google has included only a few types of institutions, including hotels, supermarkets, and restaurants.

While the feature is currently uniform for these buildings, Google mentions how it will need to implement further development, as it currently is not consistent across all the types mentioned above.

When will this feature roll out for Google Maps users?

The feature is currently being tested, and there is no clarity as to when it will be available for users. It is currently available to a limited set of users and only features only a handful of building entrance points.

However, until it does, Google has quietly rolled out its glanceable directions that provide crucial information on a user’s lock or home screen. According to AndroidPolice.com, users with Android version 11.116 and iOS version 6.104.2 will be able to benefit from this update.
