Google Maps is an integral part of our routine. In fact, most of us can safely admit that we don’t leave our houses without glancing at the traffic conditions on the map. Not too long ago, Google also changed the colours within the interface, setting off several online debates concerning the move.
But while it is actively working on visually enhancing its Google Maps experience, there are several other more crucial developments taking place that are designed to add more convenience. In a more recent move, Google has begun rolling out AI capabilities that are moulded around the needs of Indian users. According to Miriam Karthika Daniel, Vice President of Google Maps Experiences, the improvements were made keeping in mind the long-term goal of bringing experiences down to users’ smartphone apps. Here’s everything you need to know about this change:
5 AI features that will be available on Google Maps
From live walking navigation to fuel-efficient routing, Google has incorporated five features to help you get through your day better. Check out what they are:
1. Address Descriptors
2. Lens in Maps
3. Live View Walking
4. Fuel-efficient routing
5. Collaboration with ONDC and Namma Yatri
1. Address Descriptors
Address Descriptor is a new AI feature that will allow users to find locations based on nearby landmarks. This means if and when a user drops a pin in the area, Google Maps will identify and show up to five important landmarks within the area for them to navigate better. While this feature isn’t out yet, it is scheduled to roll out for Indian users early next year.

2. Lens in Maps
The next time you’re walking down a street and see an unfamiliar lane, you will be able to point your Google Maps app at it for more information regarding anything within your periphery. This will include cafes and restaurants, and will even allow you to browse through opening hours, ratings, photos as well as reviews.
3. Live View Walking
If you’re a fan of the walking view on Google Maps, there’s good news for you. Google plans to better this feature by adding arrows, directions and distance markers on the map for quick guidance. The feature is all set to be rolled out across 3,000 Indian cities and towns; however, Android users may get access to it earlier.
4. Fuel-efficient routing
Coming January, Google Maps users will be able to benefit from the fuel-efficient routing feature for two and four-wheelers, respectively. This feature uses AI capabilities to analyse vehicle engine information and determine real-time traffic data and road elevation, among other details, while you navigate to your location.
5. Collaboration with ONDC and Namma Yatri
Google has established a partnership with ONDC and Namma Yatri. The aim behind this move was to have a more ‘discoverable and efficient transportation landscape’. However, if you’re a Mumbai or Kolkata user, you don’t have to worry – as Google is shortly looking at bringing in a change to the ‘Where is my train’ app for updated, real-time train timings for its users in these cities as well.
With AI capabilities at the forefront, there is no dearth of smart features available for Indian users. That said, 2024 certainly looks like a promising year if you, like us, rely on Google Maps to plan your day.
