Google’s ‘Learn About’ is an AI-powered tutor

One of Google’s biggest announcements at its I/O developers’ conference was NotebookLM, its AI-powered learning tool for students, powered by the Gemini 1.5 Pro Large Language Model (LLM).

Now though, Google has released yet another tool for students which is supposed to help them learn about new topics at school or college on their smartphones and laptops, entirely from scratch. Meet Google’s Learn About tool, built using the LearnLM large-language model.

Google Learn About tool: What it is and how it works

Google’s experimental Learn About AI tool, according to Google, is a conversational AI-powered companion which helps one learn about new topics from scratch. Now you may wonder how this differs from tools such as NotebookLM or even the Gemini chatbot.

Well, for starters, NotebookLM can generate summaries and create quizzes out of the material you upload on it. Gemini on the other hand, simply pulls information from sources on the internet and presents them in a concise format, and provides you with reference links for the same.

Learn About though, takes a more comprehensive approach with text, audio, as well pictures and videos, to help users with a thorough deep-dive into the subjects of their choice. What’s cool is, the platform also offers interactive guides which users can go through step-by-step to understand concepts better.

A separate section highlights the common misconceptions associated with any given topics to help ensure no users fall prey to them in the future. Additionally, the platform also gets sections for word definitions titled “Build your vocab” and “Why it matters,” to help you understand the significance of learning any given topic.

Handy as the tool is, it is important to note here that Learn About is currently available only for select users in the US. When other regions including India will get access to it, remains unknown as of now.

Other AI-powered learning tools from Google to look out for

Should Learn About or NotebookLM not be your thing however, Google has another tool in store for you. Namely, Google Gems. Powered by LearnLM, Google Gems act as subject matter experts and your personal tutors across subjects and specialisations.

If you present a Google Gem with a mathematical equation for example, they will solve it for you and tell you the answer. Not just that. They will also provide you with a step-by-step guide as to how they arrived at said answer, to ensure your exam prep is always on point.
