Google Gemini Live announced as ChatGPT rival; here’s what it can do

Google hosted the Made by Google event and took the wraps off the new Pixel 9 series in both India and around the world. But that’s not all that the brand announced. In fact, fans were also treated to a bunch of AI goodies and Gemini’s deeper integration into the Android operating system.

Among all the announcements, Google introduced Gemini Live, which marks the brand’s answer to ChatGPT’s Advanced Voice Mode. Here’s everything it can do for you:

Google Gemini Live: What is it and what it can do

Months after it was announced at Google’s annual developer’s conference, the company rolled out Gemini Live to Android smartphone users at its global event yesterday. According to Google, Gemini Live delivers a ‘mobile conversational experience’ for ‘free-flowing conversations with Gemini’.

It also goes on to state that Gemini Live is fit for having ‘in-depth’ voice conversations, and users will also be able to interrupt it mid-sentence and add new information if required. Gemini Live will also feature numerous voice options and the ability to keep conversing even when your phone’s display is turned off.

Google Gemini Live: How will it work?

Users will be able to find the Live button at the bottom-right corner of the screen. According to Google, this button will be different from the existing microphone button in the centre of the screen, which will remain the same for regular voice input.

A full-screen Live UI will also display two buttons, including ‘End’ and ‘Hold’. Once Gemini Live has been activated, users will be able to see a blue and purple waveform at the top of the screen. The animation will also be visible when the screen is locked or over other apps.

Google mentions how users will be able to brainstorm with the AI chatbot for ideas, have engaging conversations and even pause it to come back later.

When will Google Gemini Live be available to everyone?

Gemini Live will be available to Android users as well as Gemini Advanced subscribers, and it also gets 10 voice modes. While it is only available in English for now, the brand mentions its plans to expand in the future and also make it available for iPhone users.

Google also mentions how Gemini Live will gain multi-modal capabilities ‘later this year’, which will enable the generative AI bot to describe a user’s surroundings using footage captured by the smartphone camera.
