Gemini app launched in India with support for 9 Indian languages

With Gemini, Google has managed to scale across avenues, be it smartphones or laptops. In fact, AI was also the buzzword at the brand’s annual developer’s conference — Google I/O 2024.

Building on that, Google has finally expanded its dedicated Gemini app to Android users in India. The news comes four months after the app was officially available for users based in the US.

Gemini app for Android: What's there to know?

CEO Sundar Pichai took to X (formerly Twitter) to announce this development. In his post, he said, “Exciting news! Today, we’re launching the Gemini mobile app in India.”

He also mentioned how the smartphone app will be available in English as well as nine other Indian languages. This means users will be able to engage by typing or talking with the app in Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu languages.

Google also mentioned how the app will be powered by Gemini 1.0 Pro by default, reports TechCrunch. However, users will have the option of upgrading to experience Google’s Gemini Advanced, which is based on Gemini 1.5 Pro.

This will further allow a one million token context window, which is currently the longest context window available for a large-scale foundation model today. This could potentially allow users to look up a wide variety of information, and perform complex data analyses, across documents that can range up to 1,500 pages.

How to download and install Google's Gemini app for Android

Google has made the Gemini app available for only Android users, and it can be downloaded via the PlayStore app. Once installed, you will be prompted to set Gemini to be your default virtual assistant on your smartphone. You can choose to skip or switch, based on your preference. After this, you will be able to begin using the app using verbal or written commands.

Google will also be making Gemini available for iPhone users via the Google App over the next few weeks. However, before you begin using it, make sure the app is updated to its latest version.
