Google Chrome users in India issued government warning; here’s why

Whether you’re an Android or iOS smartphone user, Google Chrome, more often than not, is the default browser for most of us. However, with popularity comes being prone to threats and malicious attacks.

One such security vulnerability is currently plaguing several users worldwide and was recently alerted by India’s Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In). So, if you’re currently reading this on your Chrome browser, you might want to check this out first:

Google Chrome warning: What's there to know?

On March 8, CERT-In reported problems with Google Chrome by stating that “Multiple vulnerabilities have been reported in Google Chrome, which a remote attacker could exploit to execute arbitrary code or cause a Denial of Service (DoS) condition on the targeted system”.

The team has identified the error in the Federated Credential Management (FedCM) of Google Chrome. Apart from that, CERT-In also alerts us of memory access issues and improper implementation of the V8 script of Chrome (v122.0.6261.111 for Windows as well as Linux PCs and v122.0.6261.112 for Macs).

Google has begun rolling out security updates as an acknowledgement of the threat. While several users have already received it, it may take a while to reach every Windows, Mac or Linux system using a Chrome browser. It is recommended to turn on automatic updates or keep checking for a notification highlighting one.

How to stay safe while browsing online

While major tech companies need to ensure your safety online, there are certain steps you can take by yourself to avoid being targeted by attackers. Here are some of them:

1. Do not click on suspicious communication or links received by emails or comments
2. Avoid using public Wi-Fi, as they are mostly not secure and make your system susceptible to attacks
3. Ensure you change your passwords every month to be safe from data breaches or leaks online
4. Save your debit and credit only on trusted websites
5. Have anti-virus software installed on your phone, desktop, tablet or laptop at all times
