Google Chrome is making browsing easier with new AI-powered features

A closer look at the latest AI features on Google Chrome

Google Chrome is making browsing easier with new AI-powered features

When ChatGPT was launched in November 2022, it caused no less than a storm. Not one to be left behind, Google launched its own AI chatbot, Google Bard, in early 2023. Since then, the tech giant has been integrating AI features into its products like Search and Maps.

The latest to receive a slew of AI-powered features is its popular browser, Google Chrome. In their official blog post, Google announced three new generative AI features for Chrome. The latest Chrome update, M121, offers personalised experiences, making the browsing experience user-friendly.

1. Use AI to manage Chrome tabs

If you are someone who has at least 10 tabs open simultaneously, you are going to love this feature. While Chrome currently does allow you to group tabs, let’s be honest: it’s too much effort to do it manually.

Enter Tab Organiser – the nifty Chrome feature automatically suggests and groups similar tabs. You can even customise the name and icon emoji of the tab group so you can find them easily when you need them next.

2. Customise browser themes

This is yet another existing Chrome feature that is getting an AI twist. Google introduced generative AI wallpapers with Android 14 and Pixel 8 smartphones. It’s expanding the same text-to-image model to Chrome’s themes.

Instead of depending on the pre-existing themes on the Chrome Web Store, you can generate custom themes as per a subject, mood, visual style, or colour you want. This feature will be great for anyone who doesn’t want to settle for Chrome’s preset themes, and wants something even more personalised.

3. Get writing assistance

Like the ‘Help Me Write’ feature for Gmail, an AI-text generation feature is launching for Chrome. This feature will help you write whatever you want on the web more confidently, from writing reviews to crafting RSVPs to invites to enquiring about rentals.

How can I use the new AI features on Chrome?

Google has announced that these new features in Chrome will be available on macOS and Windows over the next few days, starting in the U.S. There is no official mention of when this update will be available in India.

Once the update is released here, ensure Google Chrome on your laptops and desktops is updated. Then, sign in, open ‘Settings’ from the three-dot menu, and navigate to the ‘Experimental AI’ page to get started. These features are still experimental, so they won’t be available for enterprise and educational accounts just yet.
