Google AI Overviews for Search is coming to India

Google has been on the headlines a lot lately. After launching its newest lineup of Pixel 9 series smartphones and announcing the very first implementation of Gemini Live, the company is now expanding a recently announced AI feature to six more countries. Thankfully, that involves India.

AI Overviews will be soon live in India in two languages – English and Hindi. The feature is the newer version of the Generative AI Search feature that Google has been experimenting with for months. Here’s everything you need to know about the same.

What is Google AI Overviews?

First announced at Google I/O 24, AI Overviews shows you a layer of Google’s own AI-powered summary for your search query every time you search for a term. These summaries will be based on content from the top-ranking websites which you would otherwise see for those terms. The aim of the feature is to make looking for information quicker and more accessible without users needing to visit multiple websites to do the same.

However, as is the case with most AI tools today, information accuracy may still be an issue with AI Overviews. One of the known problems with several AI chatbots today is the fact that responses can sometimes include completely made-up figures or statements due to misinterpretations – a phenomenon called ‘hallucination’.

That’s why you will still see your older websites and pages in AI overviews. However, these will be a little lower than where you’d eventually find them in search, and will probably need an extra scroll to get to.

Google is also in the process of testing hyperlinking within AI Overviews text, allowing users to quickly visit related pages and sites for more information and details, straight from the generated extract.

AI Overviews in India

For India, AI Overviews will also have a handy toggle for instant English-to-Hindi switching (and vice versa). Users will also be able to listen to responses when they are in a situation where reading may not be so easy, by tapping on a new ‘Listen’ button.

Google did mention that AI overviews will be rolled out to users in the supported regions “gradually” over the course of the next few weeks, and that means you may not be able to see the feature immediately. Meanwhile, stay tuned to Unboxed by Croma for all things AI and more.
