Gemini vs ChatGPT: What AI chatbot should you choose?

The year 2024 has truly been about artificial intelligence. What started with OpenAI’s ChatGPT revolution has now gradually taken over every avenue. It’s safe to say that AI is here to stay and is likely to be a part of our lives for a while. Apart from OpenAI’s ChatGPT, you have Microsoft Copilot and Google’s Gemini AI models that are best recognised as the bigwigs in the industry today.

And with each offering its own set of premium tier subscriptions, it is only fair to be confused about what is best for you. However, zeroing in on the one that’s fit for you often requires much research and understanding of what’s better suited for your working style or budget. That said, if ChatGPT vs Gemini is on your mind, we might just be able to help you make a better decision. Read on:

ChatGPT: What's different?

A lot of us need no introduction to the popular chatbot. ChatGPT’s claim to fame began with its early days as a text-generating model. The platform today, however, can do a lot more and a lot of it is accessible for free. Now, users can converse with the chatbot with text and make the most of its image generation feature. Apart from that, ChatGPT also gets voice support, and users can have a full-fledged conversation with one of its four AI-generated voices.

While most of this is available for free, a subscription definitely brings you unlimited GPT-4o access, along with the ability to generate unique images. ChatGPT is trained on a large dataset of web pages, books and articles.

If that’s not all, it is also trained on user conversations. That said, a crucial aspect to note is that the base version of ChatGPT has a knowledge cutoff of September 2023, and will have no knowledge of any events after that. This would also mean you may need to factually verify every answer generated by the chatbot instead of simply relying on it

Google Gemini: What's different?

Google’s chatbot Gemini (formerly Bard) is a generative AI model which was formally launched to users in March 2023. While the chatbot can essentially perform the same set of functions as ChatGPT, Gemini has two tiers as of today, the latest one being Advanced, which the company claims can ‘see the world the way humans do’ using text, audio and images. It utilises the Gemini 1.5 Pro and can handle complex tasks, including summarising documents and analysing data (up to 1,500 pages).

Apart from this, users can also make the most of its free version which is Gemini default. This is powered using Gemini 1.0 and can execute day-to-day tasks and interactions with ease. Unlike ChatGPT, Gemini can help you navigate through your Google devices and also does not limit you with character length or information. Today, Gemini powers a lot of Google features, including AI search overviews. That said, the feature is undergoing scrutiny for providing misleading results and several users have called it out on social media as of today.

Google Gemini vs OpenAI ChatGPT: Which one should you go for?

Both AI LLMs can largely perform the same set of tasks. However, it often boils down to your use case and requirements. If you plan to use the AI chatbots for generating text or images, you might consider purchasing a premium tier for either of the tools. Here’s a quick comparison to ensure you choose better:

Research: If your primary usage involves research, Gemini would make a better option for you considering it can access and process information via real-time web results.

Text generation: ChatGPT makes a better choice if you prefer using your AI chatbot for text generation. This could involve poems, codes, scripts, emails or letters.

User interface: While both Gemini and ChatGPT are easy to navigate, you have a lot more options to interact with if you’re using Google’s Gemini. It comes with visual elements and links that you can explore. Apart from this, the responses are also easy to share.

Free version and availability: Lastly, if you’re not devising to subscribe, Gemini offers a lot more features for free, including image generation. For generating images on ChatGPT, you do need a subscription.

With this list in mind, you should be able to pick between Gemini and ChatGPT effectively. That said, make sure you practice online hygiene which ultimately helps prevent AI chatbots from using your data.
