Since its launch in May 2024, Google’s conversational AI-powered bot, Gemini Live, has only been available to Gemini Advanced users. The bot, which can have multi-faceted human-like conversations, had a small membership fee to begin with.
However, the wind has shifted and a select few free users have been looped in for the new update. Gemini Live is selectively being made available for free Android account holders, be it a Pixel or otherwise.
How to access Gemini Live
It looks like Google is rolling out Gemini Live in a phased manner. It may be available to some users before the rest. Here is how to find out if you are eligible to try Gemini Live.

To check if you have access to Gemini Live, make sure your Gemini app is updated. Open the app to look for the waveform icon with a sparkle on the app screen on your smartphone or tablet. If you can see it, it means you have Gemini Live access.
Upon clicking it, you will have a walkthrough of how to use the feature. Post that you will be able to interact with Gemini, Google’s digital assistant. You can also interrupt Gemini when it is speaking to you.
Google hasn’t rolled out the update to all its Android smartphone users, and it is unlikely if it plans to do so, there is a good chance it could come to smartphones in a phased manner.
Unfortunately, there is no variant available for iOS yet. If you are an Apple user and are feeling the FOMO, Apple Intelligence is set to be rolled out with iOS 18.1 in October 2024 on select iPhones.
Gemini Live features
Gemini Live is a part of a series of enhancements in Google’s pipeline. Here are a few features that have been rolled out for Android users.
To keep the conversations seamless and engaging, Gemini Live offers ten voice options for all responses within the app. The users can input text and also use it hands-free. This provides flexibility for the user to access it even when the phone is locked or in the background. Gemini allows users to select their preferred voice.
As Gemini Live becomes widely available, users can look forward to a more dynamic hands-free experience. For more tech updates subscribe to Unboxed by Croma.
