Gemini in Google Maps can help you plan trips using screenshots

Travel planning can indeed be quite a logistical nightmare, especially when relying on a collection of scattered screenshots from Instagram or travel blogs. Google aims to simplify this process with its latest updates to Gemini, which introduces a new feature in Google Maps called ‘Screenshot List.’

This feature leverages its Gemini AI to scan the screenshots on your device and organise them into a cohesive travel plan. Intrigued? Read on to find out more.

Google Maps can leverage Gemini to build your travel itinerary

The latest update allows Maps to scan users’ photo libraries for travel-related screenshots: think cafes seen on Instagram, hidden spots from travel reels, or bookmarked attractions. Once given access, the app automatically identifies locations mentioned in those screenshots and plots them on a personalised map.

However, this is only limited to text content in a screenshot for now, it cannot recognise photos so far. Users can then save, categorise, and access these locations while navigating a city.

This transforms what used to be a scattered collection of screenshots into a visual, interactive itinerary. Instead of forgetting about those hidden gems tucked away in a photo album, users can now see them all laid out, making it easier to plan routes, group activities by location, or simply explore based on proximity.

Beyond screenshot recognition, Google Maps also allows users to create themed lists like “Best Brunch Spots” or “Evening Hangouts,” complete with images, reviews, and live business hours. These lists are shareable and can sync across devices, helping groups plan more cohesively.

Real-time features add another layer of utility. For instance, the app can notify users when they’re near a saved location, provide live business data to avoid crowds, and even assist with navigation offline.

While Google Maps has long been a go-to for directions, these travel-focused features position it as a serious player in the trip-planning space. For more updates about the latest news in tech, stay tuned to Unboxed by Croma.
