Foldable phones: Worth the hype or still a work in progress?

Discover the world of foldable smartphones: Everything you need to know

Foldable smartphones represent a revolution of sorts in smartphone technology, offering users a unique combination of portability, functionality, and style. In this comprehensive guide, we will explore everything you need to know about foldable phones, including their history, technology, advantages, and drawbacks.

Introduction to foldable mobile phones

Foldable phones feature bendable displays that can be folded or unfolded, allowing users to switch between a compact form factor like a regular smartphone and a larger screen of around 7 to 8 inches. Foldable displays are equipped with flexible OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode) technology, which allows the screen to bend without damaging the pixels.

Various hinge mechanisms are used to facilitate the folding and unfolding of the display while maintaining durability and usability. Foldable phone manufacturers employ innovative materials and engineering techniques to ensure that foldable phones withstand thousands of folding cycles without significant wear and tear. Important considerations for durability include factors such as crease formation and display longevity.

Types of foldable phones

At present, there are two types of foldable mobile phones available in the market. The first one is a horizontally foldable display phone like the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and the OnePlus Open, which can be opened like a book. Apart from Samsung and OnePlus, brands like Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, and Tecno have already introduced such foldable phones in different markets.

The second type is equipped with a vertically foldable screen, such as the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Oppo Find N3 Flip. Besides Samsung and Oppo, brands like and Vivo have launched flip-style foldable phones in various regions. However, these offerings haven’t been launched in the Indian market yet. According to reports, Apple is said to be working on its first foldable phone, which may debut in the next few years.

Advantages of foldable mobile phones

1. Portability: Foldable phones offer the convenience of a compact form factor for carrying them easily in pockets or bags. When opened, they provide a large screen space for productivity and multimedia consumption.

The first-generation foldable phones were quite thick and heavy. Huawei Mate X, the first foldable phone from a mainstream brand, which debuted in 2019, weighed 295 grams and had a thickness of 11mm when folded. Brands are constantly working hard to reduce the weight and thickness of foldable phones. The Honor Magic V2 that debuted last year weighs only 231 grams, like some traditional candy bar flagship phones. It has a thickness of 4.7mm when opened and 10.1mm when folded.

2. Enhanced productivity: The larger screen size when the phone is ‘unfolded’ enables enhanced productivity, such as easier multitasking, improved document editing, and more immersive gaming experience. Foldable phones often support multitasking, allowing users to display two or three apps simultaneously on the same screen.

Drawbacks and challenges

1. Price: Foldable phones tend to be more expensive than traditional smartphones due to the complexity of their design and manufacturing processes. High price tags may deter some consumers from adopting foldable technology.

2. Durability concerns: Despite advancements in durability, foldable phones may still be susceptible to issues such as screen creasing, hinge malfunction, or display damage from folding. Additionally, addressing these issues through repairs could entail significant costs due to the intricate nature of foldable phone components and specialised repair processes.

3. App optimisation: App developers need to optimise their applications to fully utilise the unique form factor of foldable phones, which may take time and result in compatibility issues with certain apps. This concern is becoming less prevalent as brands like Samsung and OnePlus prioritise optimising app experiences to seamlessly integrate with the larger displays of foldable phones, mitigating compatibility issues and ensuring smoother user experience.

Conclusion

Foldable mobile phones represent a significant advancement in smartphone technology, offering users the flexibility to switch between compact and large-screen modes seamlessly. While they come with advantages such as portability, multitasking capabilities, and enhanced productivity, they also face challenges related to price and durability.
