Eminem’s latest single called Fuel is out, and with it comes a brilliant new concept. The entirety of the song’s music video has Eminem, fellow rapper JID and the lyrics all draped in a retro theme, complete with references to some classic 16-bit games from the 90s.
Irrespective of whether you are a fan of 90s video games, the video brings a fresh take on the rap music video genre, which typically has its very own underground feel.
Those with a keen eye, however, would have noticed that the games referenced in the Fuel music video aren’t just random, but a throwback to some really popular games from back in the day.

Intrigued? Here’s a quick look at all the retro games referenced in Eminem’s latest music video.
Plants vs Zombies
2009’s Plants vs Zombies was a phenomenon across multiple platforms. With a bunch of cartoon-ified undead zombies, an arsenal of weaponised plants and some easy-to-play side-scrolling action, Plants vs Zombies offers a good blend between strategy and simple, raw fun.
Today, Plants vs Zombies has multiple titles in the franchise, some of which you can enjoy even on your smartphones. A sequel called Plants vs Zombies 2 can also be purchased from EA (Electronic Arts).
Street Fighter
If you know retro fighting games, you probably know of the Street Fighter series. An inspiration to many of today’s 2D and 3D fighting games, 1987’s Street Fighter along with its characters (Ryu and Ken), is a big part of popular culture today, along with similar franchises – Mortal Kombat and Tekken.
While the original game was available on MS-DOS, its successors eventually came to multiple platforms, including the Sony PlayStation series as well as Windows. With six successors and many spin-offs, Street Fighter today has over 20 games, and the most recent one – Street Fighter 6 can be enjoyed on Windows gaming laptops and PCs, as well as the Sony PlayStation 5 series.
Rock n’ Roll Racing (with a touch of Road Rash)
While we’re not 100 per cent sure about this one, the side-scrolling racing/driving retro game looks a lot like 1993’s Rock n’ Roll Racing, which was released for the SNES (Super Nintendo Entertainment System). The game included a rather unique 45-degree angled gameplay view, which is seen in many instances across Eminem’s Fuel music video.
The graphics in these instances, also seem to take cues from the popular Road Rash series of motorcycle racing games where the objective was not only to cross the finish line first, but to do that with any means necessary, including throwing punches and kicks at other racers mid-race.
These were the games we managed to spot in Fuel. Did we miss out on any? Do let us know in the comments below!
