Dyson OnTrac headphones announced with customisable ear cups and cushions

The thought of customising my iPhone with a new case or skin goes through my head every other day, but customising my pair of headphones? Now that’s something I don’t think about often. However, if you do, Dyson’s newest pair of headphones (yes, you read that right) may just be the product for you.

Ditching the air-purification mechanism of the Dyson Zone headphones, the brand’s first-ever headphones, the new Dyson OnTrac instead sets its sights on customisability. And we’re not talking about choosing one of many shades when buying a pair. No, these headphones allow you to customise colours and materials, after you’ve made your purchase. Here’s how.

Dyson OnTrac: What’s new?

The Dyson OnTrac looks more or less like a regular pair of headphones, except it comes with customisable outer ear cups. These let you change how the world sees your headphones by simply swapping out your current pair of earcups with one that has a different colour and texture. The bold can even go a step beyond and mix-and-match these to create new combinations.

That’s not all. The Dyson OnTrac also features customisable ear cushions. While all the options are made of foam, you can choose between different colours of ear cushions to further personalise the look of these headphones.

Dyson claims that there are over 2,000 unique combinations to be made her, including both the cups and cushions. But customisation aside, this is also a premium audio product, and comes with a lot of features.

Apart from noise cancellation, Dyson ships the OnTrac with 55-hours of claimed battery life. That’s more than Apple’s AirPods Max, or even some of the best premium offerings from Sony and Bose. The headphones also come with on-head detection for automatically pausing your playback, as well as 40mm drivers with an audio frequency range of 6Hz to 21,000Hz.

While you can use the headphones for wired listening, note that there is no 3.5mm audio jack, so you will be needing a 3.5mm to USB-C adapter for wired playback.

Dyson OnTrac: How much does it cost?

The Dyson OnTrac is priced at $499.99, which is about Rs 41,800. All its customisable bits though, are sold separately starting at $49.99 (about Rs 4,178). While we’re not currently sure if Dyson will bring the OnTrac headphones to India, we do know that the premium product will go up against other offerings like the Sony WH1000 XM5 or the Bose QuietComfort Ultra. But given that the Dyson Zone was eventually introduced in India after its global launch, we assume the OnTrac may come here later this year.
