I tried the Daily Word app and here’s how it improved my vocabulary

Smartphones and software have largely reduced our need to worry about formatting or grammar. With features like autocorrect, predictive text, in-built dictionaries, and ‘Text-to-Speech’, today, we are able to communicate effectively – even without a vast vocabulary or perfect spelling skills.

Add AI to the mix, and we have voice assistants like Siri and Google Assistant that understand and respond to natural language queries, even if we don’t use precise vocabulary.

Of course, none of this can replace the need to learn or hone one’s vocabulary. And in my pursuit to improve my own, I came across the Daily Word app.

What is the Daily Word app?

The Daily Word – Word of the Day is a fairly simple app designed to better your vocabulary and language skills. It’s a helpful tool for students and professionals alike or anyone simply passionate about words.

It was created by a team of educators and linguists who aim to bring forward an app that can easily fit into routines, offering a simple yet effective way to learn new words every day.

What did I think of the Daily Word app?

With a clean interface that has just four tabs, I found the app to be quite easy to navigate. The app itself is quite simple, and it gives you both the spelt-out and audio pronunciation of the word right when you open it. What was really helpful was that Daily Word provided the context and examples in which words are supposed to be used.

When I tapped on the word, it also provided an extended list of meanings. I particularly enjoyed reading the trivia such as history, origin or interesting facts, that Daily Word provided about the word. The homepage also allowed me to scroll through the words of the week, which helped me remember them better.

Another feature that I found to be helpful is that you can access a list of all the words the app has presented till date. It gave me a chance to revisit complex words at a later date or review them if I missed a day.

Like any other app, Daily Word, too, has its limitations. I wish there were features such as vocabulary exercises, quizzes or games that might help with retaining information better. A progress or a streak tracker would’ve also helped.

What does make it stand out though is that it uses Merriam-Webster as a source. So, when I add a word from the Daily Word app to my vocabulary, I am ensured that it is not only reliable but also aligned with current and evolving language trends.

How to get the Daily Word app

Daily Word – Word of the Day app is available only for Android smartphone users. All the features of the app, from definitions to trivia, are completely free to use.

There are no ads or in-app purchases either, and the app does not have a premium tier of any sort. Whether you’re passionate about words or the art of learning, Daily Word is certainly the app to have on your list.
