OpenAI makes ChatGPT more conversational with this update

ChatGPT Plus users will soon be able to enjoy a ‘Her-like’ advanced voice mode

We’re no strangers to ChatGPT’s Read Aloud feature, and OpenAI has also ensured it is accessible using various smartphone shortcuts. However, if you’re a ChatGPT Plus subscriber, the AI platform gives you plenty more to choose from. Some of these perks include faster response speed, priority access to features and also the ability to choose from more voice options.

The company recently announced that it will be bringing in an advanced voice mode for some of the Plus users. The development is supposed to make the chatbot more conversational apart from having other improvements.

ChatGPT advanced voice mode: What's new?

Like the movie Her, ChatGPT will also be able to hold a realistic voice conversation, allowing users to even interrupt the chatbot while speaking. Unlike other voice assistants like Alexa or Siri, this robotic voice feature is reportedly supposed to sound more ‘life-like’. It not only responds similarly to a human voice but also giggles and has a wider range of expressions while interacting with the user.

The new feature will also be able to judge a speaker’s emotional state based on the tone of their voice or the choice of their words. While ChatGPT already has a bunch of preset voice options for all its users, (Juniper, Breeze, Cove and Ember), the new inclusion will bring it closer to that of a personal assistant that can hold conversations apart from responding more naturally.

The company has also stated how the feature has been trialed with 100 testers who ‘collectively speak a total of 45 different languages and represent 29 different geographies’.

Who will be able to enjoy the ChatGPT advanced voice mode?

According to OpenAI, the advanced voice mode feature will work with the most powerful version of the chatbot — the GPT-4o. The model was unveiled to a larger audience only a few months ago at the brand’s global ‘Feels like Magic’ event. For safety purposes, the brand will not exceed the four preset voice options, mostly to avoid impersonation.

The company had previously delayed the roll-out of the realistic voice conversation experience to July instead of late June since it needed time to reach its launch standard.

However, as of today, only a small subset of ChatGPT Plus users have access to this feature and it remains to be seen if it will make its way to the rest or the free tier of the app.
