In a move that’s set to make digital conversations feel a lot more human, OpenAI has introduced a major update to ChatGPT’s memory. Starting today, users on the Plus and Pro plans will notice the AI getting a little more personal, and that’s by design.
ChatGPT will now be smarter and give more contextual answers
According to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, ChatGPT can now “reference all your past conversations,” allowing it to build a more nuanced understanding of each user’s preferences, tone, and interests. Altman in his post on X about the announcement, added, “we have greatly improved memory in ChatGPT–it can now reference all your past conversations! this is a surprisingly great feature imo (in my opinion), and it points at something we are excited about: AI systems that get to know you over your life, and become extremely useful and personalized.”
Whether you’re a student who always asks for study tips or a writer seeking help brainstorming short stories, ChatGPT can now remember those details to tailor its responses more effectively.
What does this mean for you?
Real-world applications abound. Let’s say you’re a marketer frequently asking for campaign ideas in a particular tone, over time, ChatGPT will begin delivering suggestions that match your style. Or maybe you’re learning a new language and prefer grammar tips over vocab drills, the chatbot can remember that too.
Adding to memory is as easy as saying, “Remember this,” while forgetting is just as simple. You can manage everything it stores – whether you want to wipe the slate clean or delete a single memory – through the Personalisation section in settings. Importantly, this feature is opt-in by default, putting control firmly in the user’s hands.
That said, the rollout isn’t global just yet. Users in the EU, UK, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein will have to wait, as the feature is currently unavailable in those regions.
For now, this update marks a significant shift toward AI that feels more like a long-term companion than a one-off assistant. With memory in play, ChatGPT is inching closer to becoming your personal, and personalised, copilot (pun not intended) for everyday tasks, and that’s a big deal.
