OpenAI launched a dedicated ChatGPT app for macOS-based PCs only a month ago and has been gradually rolling it out for users ever since. However, in a new announcement, the company confirmed that it will be making the app available to more users, and it will not be restricted to ChatGPT Plus subscribers. Wondering how to get it for yourself? Here’s everything you need to know:
ChatGPT for Mac: What's there to know?
The new desktop app will allow users to engage with the AI assistant and add elements such as files, photos and screenshots directly into the prompt or message. That said, there is a catch. For now, Apple states that the ChatGPT desktop app will only work for users with M1 or later Mac devices. To download the app, users will need to navigate open.ai.com/chatgpt/mac and simply install it on their device.

Users can simply press Command, Option + Space will trigger the ChatGPT over any screen. Apart from written prompts, the app will also support verbal commands with its Voice Mode. This can be accessed by tapping the headphones icon in the app.
The ChatGPT app will also give users free access to the latest ChatGPT model, albeit with certain restrictions. So, whether you have a compatible MacBook, iMac, Mac mini or Mac Studio, users can make the most of the app for their day-to-day tasks.
Apart from this, Apple also plans to introduce its own generative AI experience with Apple Intelligence in the near future. However, if you’re a Windows user, don’t fret. OpenAI has plans to bring forth a desktop app for Windows platforms later this year. While the company doesn’t reveal the date or month for now, it does mention how it plans to begin Alpha testing post-June.
