ChatGPT app coming to Android; pre-registrations go live

Android users, rejoice

ChatGPT app coming to Android; pre-registrations go live

Two months after launching for iOS, and nearly eight months after the desktop version, OpenAI’s ChatGPT chatbot is finally available for pre-order on Google Play Store.

OpenAI, in a tweet, said that ChatGPT for Android will be rolled out sometime next week without mentioning a specific day. If ChatGPT’s launch for the web and iOS are anything to go by, the Android version may be released in the US first, followed by other countries.

How do I pre-register for the app?

If you wish to be notified as soon as the app is rolled out for your Android device, all you need to do is head over to Google Play on your Android device, search for ChatGPT, and hit ‘install’. Following this, a pop-up will appear on your screen saying the app will be automatically installed when it’s available. It’s that simple.

What's new in the Android version?

The ChatGPT app for Android is expected to be more or less similar to the iOS version in terms of functionality, with a similar interface, and the ability to sync conversations and preferences across devices, irrespective of the operating system.

However, one must bear in mind that Android and iOS are two very different operating systems. Therefore, whether or not things such as smart assistant integration will be seen on the Android version of the app, remains to be seen as of yet.

How does ChatGPT stack up against its competition?

Competition has been fast heating up on the artificial intelligence scene, and with its Android app, OpenAI is taking yet another step towards establishing its dominance in the space.

The company released a custom instructions feature last week, as a beta version for ChatGPT Plus plan users. This feature allows one to tell ChatGPT about them, such that it helps the chatbot answer their queries in a manner tailored to them.

ChatGPT has also now caught up with Microsoft’s Bing, which has been available on both, Android and iOS since February. Additionally, perhaps its biggest rival right now, Google Bard is currently available as a web-only offering, giving ChatGPT a significant advantage.
