Getting eight hours of sleep can be the difference between feeling energetic or lethargic the next day. Not getting enough sleep on a regular basis could be a precursor to some underlying issues. One way to become aware of such issues is with the help of a smart wearable. Most fitness bands and smartwatches come with built-in sensors that can monitor your sleep and give you a detailed analysis. But is it really safe to wear a smart band or watch to sleep? Read on.
Why do people wear fitness bands while sleeping?
Sleep mode on a fitness band or smartwatch analyses your sleep and gives a visual representation of how you’ve slept through the night. These visuals can help you pinpoint reasons why you aren’t getting a good night’s sleep.
A band can detect sleeping patterns using the inbuilt sensors. By recording your movements during sleep, the sensor tells you which sleeping mode you are in. These include deep sleep, light sleep, and awake. These sleep patterns can be tracked over a week, a month, or a year. Some trackers also have a feature of sleep score, which tells you how well you’ve slept.
Is it safe to wear a fitness band while sleeping?
Some studies warn us not to spend a lot of time with electronic gadgets. But fitness bands are far simpler in comparison to gadgets like a smartphone or a laptop, and the choice comes down to how important it is for you to track your sleep.
Other issues could be related to the material of the fitness band. Wearing them for an extended amount of time is likely to cause itchiness or irritation to your skin. Try putting them on for a longer period during the day, before going to sleep while wearing one. It is also advisable to turn off Wi-Fi and internet connectivity when wearing a tracker to sleep. You wouldn’t want notifications to disturb your sleep.
