Put those doubts to rest once and for all

Can the MacBook Pro charge with a USB Type-C cable?

Apple last year, in its Scary Fast event, unveiled a range of MacBook Pros with the M3, M3 Pro and M3 Max chips. And, of course, while the addition of Space Black colour was undoubtedly the coolest part of the event, it was also the addition of versatile charging options that made them popular with users.

But if you’ve stumbled upon this post wondering if you can use a USB Type-C cable with your MacBook, you’re in the right place. Here’s everything you need to know about it:

The history of Apple MacBooks and USB-C ports

Apple made the historic addition of USB Type-C ports in MacBooks back in its 12-inch 2015 lineup. This expansion was typically for users to connect any of their peripherals and accessories, including a display extension or to, of course, charge the laptop. While this was the last of the Thunderbolt 2 port, MacBooks today come with a USB Type-C port and are backed with Thunderbolt 3 and 4 technology for supported accessories.

The new MacBooks, including the Pro variant, come with a Thunderbolt/USB Type-C port. While the M3 has two USB Type-C ports with Thunderbolt 3, the Pro and Max versions have three such ports with USB4 along with Thunderbolt 4 technology. That said, all the variants come with a 240W USB Type-C cable for charging purposes. It flaunts a new woven design and can now be used with everything from MacBooks to iPhones.

The laptop, of course, still comes with a MagSafe port, and it can cause it to get a tad confusing. But your Apple MacBook Pro (M3, 2023) can be charged using both the MagSafe and the USB Type-C port.

The new MacBooks have more or less retained their facade and look similar to their predecessors. However, Apple bid farewell to the iconic TouchBar and the 13-inch variant for the MacBook Pro. Apart from this, Apple has also ensured a larger battery backup with up to a whopping 22 hours of video playback.
